Welcome to the semi-weekly AYA. If you’ve been following along for a while, you’ll know that I make no judgments about taste. Your favorite movie could be Pluto Nash or it could be Casablanca; I don’t care. With that in mind, here are some questions to get you started.
- What is your favorite form of art? For example, do you like paintings best, or do you prefer to watch films? Feel free to define ‘art’ as you see fit.
- Do you gravitate towards art with a specific mood? For example, do you like bleak, depressing music better than happy music?
- How do you approach art? For example, do you prefer to look at a painting from an intellectual, detached standpoint, or do you prefer to immerse yourself in fabric art, touching it and smelling it?
- For that matter, why do you consume art? Are you the type who likes intellectual stimulation, or do you just want to turn off your brain and watch a silly disaster movie after work?
- Do you enjoy more abstract art, or do you prefer something with a little more structure?
- Are you more interested in analog or digital art?
Go for it. And, as always, these questions are just templates; feel free to answer as you see fit.

Probably a mix of film and photography would be my favorite, with sculpture included, maybe. Maybe more a style, like expressionism. I had a huge dada phase and I still enjoy it. I think something that gets a reaction besides “interesting” or some mental masturbation is better – something more visceral. IDK.
I don’t feel the medium is that essential to the enjoyment. There’s a lot of fun things you can try on any medium, and medium snobs are annoying. I’m not sure shutting off the brain is really that, though, even if I don’t like art just because of intellectualism. It’s something that has to cause a reaction IMO, and the more felt, the better. If you’re down to discussing technique in an art gallery, the technique is either really amazing or the art is poor: academically correct but lifeless. Of course, sometimes shitty technique comes with poor art anyway. I like things that have life even when they’re dark and somber.
I enjoy things abstract a lot of the time, I grew up on surrealism. That said, there’s a certain order to be found in abstraction, and even if Malevich was a douche, I sort of enjoy Suprematism. I think some groups have a really awesome balance of abstract and representative.
